چکیده

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is a freeelectron laser (FEL) at SLAC producing coherent 1.5 Å x-rays. This requires precise, stable alignment of the electron and photon beams in the undulator. We describe construction and operational experience of the beam position monitor (BPM) system which allows the required alignment to be established and maintained. Each X-band cavity BPM employs a TM010 monopole reference cavity and a single TM110 dipole cavity detecting both horizontal and vertical beam position. The processing electronics feature low-noise single-stage three-channel heterodyne receivers with selectable gain and a phase-locked local oscillator. Sub-micron position resolution is required for a single-bunch beam of 200 pC. We discuss the specifications, commissioning and performance of 36 installed BPMs. Single shot resolutions have been measured to be about 200 nm rms at a beam charge of 200 pC.

Cavity Beam Position Monitors

Beam-based alignment and feedback systems are essential for the operation of future linear colliders and free electron lasers. A certain number of beam position monitors with a resolution in the submicron range are needed at selected locations. Most beam position monitors detect the electric or the magnetic eld excited by a beam of charged particles at di erent locations around the beam pipe. I...

Investigation of Beam Alignment Monitor Technologies for the LCLS FEL Undulator?

To maintain gain in the proposed 100 m long linac-driven Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) Free Electron Laser (FEL) undulator, the electron and photon beams must propagate colinearly to within -5 urn rms over distances comparable to the 11.7 m FEL gain length in the 6 mm diameter undulator vacuum chamber. We have considered a variety of intercepting and non-intercepting position monitor techn...

Linac Coherent Light Source Undulator Rf Bpm System *

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) will be the world's first x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) when it becomes operational in 2009. The LCLS is currently in the construction phase. The beam position monitor (BPM) system planned for the LCLS undulator will incorporate a high-resolution X-band cavity BPM system described in this paper. The BPM system will provide high-resolution measurements of...

Lcls Undulator Commissioning, Alignment, and Performance *

The LCLS x-ray FEL has recently achieved its 1.5Angstrom lasing and saturation goals upon first trial. This was achieved as a result of a thorough pre-beam checkout, both traditional and beam-based component alignment techniques, and high electron beam brightness. The x-ray FEL process demands very tight tolerances on the straightness of the electron beam trajectory (<5 μm) through the LCLS und...

Review of Diagnostics for next Generation Linear Accelerators

New electron linac designs incorporate substantial advances in critical beam parameters such as beam loading and bunch length and will require new levels of performance in stability and phase space control. In the coming decade, e(and e+) linacs will be built for a high power linear collider (TESLA, CLIC, JLC/NLC), for fourth generation X-ray sources (TESLA FEL, LCLS, Spring 8 FEL) and for basi...
